LegalTech Diaries Volume 15

CEO and Co-Founder
Pandektes

Neither you nor your co-founder came from a legal background, which you’ve described as an advantage to the business. How has this been so?

The fact that neither of us came from a legal background meant we could approach every conversation with an open mind. Many people we spoke to early on dreamed of better research solutions but believed it was hopeless to compete with incumbent platforms.
What we did instead was obsess over understanding everyone, from lawyers and law students to judges. This gave us a wide range of insights into how legal research is actually done, and a clearer perspective on how we could redefine the way lawyers access and analyse the law. We invested heavily in learning and took every opportunity to deepen our understanding. That quickly evolved into the first version of the product. Today, that learning continues, and we push this same obsessive curiosity across the team.

When an entire company is focused on learning and solving a very specific problem, that’s when the magic happens. And now, we’ve proven that it’s possible to compete with, and even replace, incumbent platforms.

You’re building what would effectively be the first pan-EU legal database, which puts Pandektes in a position of significant influence over how law is researched and applied across borders. How does that responsibility weigh on you?

There is already a significant responsibility embedded in our solution. From the beginning, the core of the platform has been that users should be able to trust every source, and trust Pandektes to support all of their legal research and analysis.

In my view, that responsibility doesn’t increase as we expand pan-European; we already carry a high standard for delivering a trustworthy solution. What will change, however, is the scale of our impact. The goal of Pandektes is to improve legal analysis through deeper and broader source coverage.

We are already seeing how the platform influences how cases are argued in court and how new legislation is shaped. That impact will only grow as we incorporate more diverse perspectives.

In Denmark, lawyers currently access less than half a percent of all court rulings each year. Will Pandektes level the playing field between large and small firms, or will it simply accelerate the advantage of those who are already good at using data?

Access to court rulings varies by country, but in general, firms of all sizes rely on the same data through a handful of platforms. We’re expanding coverage so there is more to search and analyse, while our search technology reduces the time required for thorough analysis.
Today, large firms typically rely on teams of students and associates to carry out research, and there will clearly be an impact there. They may spend the same amount of time, but will be able to review 3–5× more sources.

For mid-sized and small firms, however, the benefits are more immediate. They don’t have the same number of associates, so they can increase both quality and productivity almost instantly.

Large firms, on the other hand, will likely face tougher questions around billing models and structures, as they are also the ones investing most heavily in workflow automation. For research specifically, I believe this will level the playing field.

A strong legal professional with sharp analytical skills and the right methodology will, with Pandektes, be able to do work that would have required a large team just a few years ago.
There will still be significant work to do, there will always be more data to analyse and validate, but in my view, the research landscape will become more level.
