Mitratech’s answer to “SaaS is dead”: buy the agents, open the doors

In a year when investors asked whether AI agents would make enterprise software obsolete, Mitratech has acquired BotDojo, an agent builder with no legal background, and opened its systems to everyone else’s agents too. It’s a bet on where the value in legal AI actually sits.

For a few weeks this spring, the market decided enterprise software was finished. AI agents, the argument went, would log into your systems, do the work and make the per-seat licence look faintly ridiculous. Software stocks took a beating, and when Anthropic released legal plugins for Claude Cowork in February, legal tech got its own dose of the panic.

Mitratech’s response, announced today, is to buy some agents of its own. And then, rather more surprisingly, to open the door to everyone else’s.

When LegalTechTalk spoke to Mitratech’s legal leadership late on a Friday evening, the deal was still being finalised and the target still couldn’t be named. It can now: BotDojo.

BotDojo is an Austin startup founded in 2023 by CEO Paul Henry, with Edwin Woo as CTO. It is not a legaltech company. Its agents handle customer support, sales, collections and voice calls, and its team describes itself as operators who have run technology at billion-dollar companies and learnt the hard way where AI breaks in production. BotDojo publicly reports more than 2 million interactions handled and more than 1 million call minutes as of August 2026.

One example it cites comes from fintech, not law: BotDojo says its merchant evaluation agent cut Onramp Funds’ reviews from four to six hours to under ten minutes. Swap merchant applications for outside counsel invoices and the relevance to legal isn’t hard to spot.

It got there, according to Chris Iconos, CEO of Mitratech Legal Solutions, “without any sales, marketing organisations. It really is a pure tech team.” Mitratech also knew the product first-hand: BotDojo lists it as a customer, using the platform internally to help staff find information.

Mitratech is the other half. Founded in 1987 and based in Austin, it builds the matter management, e-billing and spend systems that many of the world’s largest corporate legal departments run on, and says it has more than 12,000 legal team relationships. BotDojo’s technology is going into ARIES™, Mitratech’s AI layer, which sits on top of all of it.

Buying a non-legal agent company to do legal work sounds backwards until you look at the argument underneath. Mitratech’s view is that the legal knowledge doesn’t live in the agent. It lives in the matters, invoices, outside counsel history and years of decisions sitting in the system of record. “In a market crowded with AI wrappers, an autonomous agent is only as effective as the underlying proprietary data and workflow history it can access,” Iconos says in the announcement.

It’s a convenient argument for a company that has spent nearly four decades collecting that data. It’s also where much of the “is SaaS dead?” debate has landed: agents may flatten the interface, but the record, the audit trail and the permissions become more valuable, not less.

The genuinely bold part is two-way MCP, which Mitratech says goes live this autumn. Mitratech data can be published to the agentic platforms legal teams’ companies are already standardising on, Copilot, Claude and the rest, and Mitratech’s agents can reach back out to them. The platform is model-agnostic and cloud-agnostic too.

Customers get a first look at Interact in October. The demo will be the easy part. The harder test is the first Monday morning a Fortune 500 legal department lets one of these agents do real work, and has to decide how closely to check it.
