Digital forensics provider Oxygen Forensics is facing scrutiny over its work with European law enforcement after US prosecutors alleged the Virginia-headquartered company concealed its Russian ownership and the development of its software in Russia.
According to reporting by POLITICO, Oxygen’s technology has been used in EU-backed electronic evidence projects and purchased by law enforcement agencies across Europe. The company develops software used to extract and analyse data from smartphones and computers.
The US Department of Justice has charged CEO Lee Reiber and Russian national Oleg Sergeyevich Davydov with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors allege five Russian nationals owned and controlled Oxygen through a Cyprus-based holding company, while its software was developed by a team in Russia. The same individuals also owned Russian company MKO Systems, which reportedly sold the underlying technology to organisations including the FSB.
The DOJ stressed that its complaint does not allege that Oxygen’s software contained malicious code or was used to gain unauthorised access to customers’ systems or data. The allegations have not been proven and the defendants are presumed innocent.
