Irwin Mitchell is planning to expand its family law practice in the North East by acquiring Silk Family Law. The law firm has made a strategic move to acquire Silk Family Law, which has offices in Tyneside and North Yorkshire. This acquisition will enhance Irwin Mitchell’s already strong national family law practice, known for handling complex cases that often reach the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

Silk Family Law holds the top spot in the Legal 500 rankings for the North East and operates from locations in Newcastle, Leeds, and Richmond, North Yorkshire. Their expertise covers all aspects of matrimonial and family law, including financial and child-related matters. They handle intricate financial matters such as business assets, agricultural enterprises, trusts, and pensions, as well as cases with international dimensions.

The completion of this deal is contingent upon contract finalization and approval from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). This development follows Irwin Mitchell’s recent investment in the Scotland-based law firm Wright, Johnston and Mackenzie and the appointment of former BBC news presenter Joanna Gosling as a mediator in their family law team.

Ros Bever, director of legal services, family, at Irwin Mitchell, said: “This strategic investment will expand our expertise and reach in the North East of England, and I’m excited about our combined future. Our family law specialists work on ground-breaking cases and achieve excellent results for our clients, and we’re delighted to be welcoming the Silk Family Law team to Irwin Mitchell.”

Ian Kennerley, managing partner at Silk Family Law, said: “We’re delighted to be joining Irwin Mitchell and remain committed to providing the same specialist high quality family law advice and representation for all our clients. We share the same values for client service and excellence and look forward to benefiting from the additional resources and support which will be available to our clients on a national and international basis.”

In the previous financial year, Irwin Mitchell executed agreements to acquire asset management firms TWP Wealth and Andrews Gwynne. They have also expanded by opening new offices in Cardiff and Liverpool and adding 18 new Partners to their team. Silk Family Law received advisory support from Armstrong Watson LLP and Harrison Clark Rickerbys Limited, while Irwin Mitchell received guidance from their in-house Corporate Partner Dan Bastide and Menzies LLP.
